County Limerick · From Viking settlement to modern city
Limerick's official history records Viking settlement from the early tenth century, Norman control from 1195, four major seventeenth-century sieges, the Treaty of Limerick in 1691 and major Georgian expansion from the eighteenth century.
King John's Castle, St Mary's Cathedral, the medieval street pattern and Georgian squares each represent different chapters. The city is particularly rewarding because these periods remain physically close together.
