The cityA city built in layers.
Limerick is almost 1,100 years old as a city, with Viking settlement, Norman fortification, centuries of conflict, Georgian expansion and modern urban life layered into one place.
The Shannon is central to the city's geography and story. The historic core around King's Island and the medieval city sits beside later streets and neighbourhoods that expanded the city.
How to experience it
Walk the historic centre, spend time beside the river, visit King John's Castle and St Mary's Cathedral, eat at the Milk Market or a city restaurant, and leave time for the pubs and music that give the city its everyday character.
