Adare's name is associated with Áth Dara, the ford of the oak. Its position beside the River Maigue helped shape the settlement, while medieval religious foundations and Desmond Castle created a landscape of unusual historical density.
Layers rather than one story
Medieval remains, later estate development, the thatched cottages and the modern village all sit close together. That layering is what makes Adare so distinctive.
